Thessaloniki food on foot tour

They say that to know a culture you should walk its streets, hear its songs, and try its cuisine. For more than 2 millenia, Thessaloniki has benefitted from its position as a ‘crossroads’ of the Balkans. Opportunities for commerce and trade drew numerous peoples from lands far and near, and their ‘footprint’ remains in the enormous variety of local cuisine, which retains the influences many different cultures.

We begin our tour from the colorful flowermarket area, amid the rounded Ottoman buildings of an old Hamam (Turkish Bath). Our guide explains the practice of coffee and hamams – found throughout old Thessaloniki. We continue with a walk up to the open market of Modiano, where our theme continues within the pungent environs of a traditional coffee and spice emporium to learn about herbs, olives, and Thessaloniki’s staple ‘koulouri’ (sesame bread-round). Moving on from Modiano, our path takes us through the flea markets of the famous Bit Bazaar, and finally to a traditional ouzeri, where we watch the distillation of this anise-flavoured spirit and taste a variety of specially-prepared mezze, and sweet pastries.
